Temp Work is Extremely Valuable for College Graduates
So you’ve worked chosen a path, your dream job. You obtained student loans and paid your way through college. The next step should be simple right? Just apply for the dream job and viola!
Well, I hope and wish that is how it works for you, but in reality, this scenario is very uncommon.
First, many college graduates do obtain the job they are seeking, but then realize that it isn’t all its cracked up to be. For instance, I have a great friend who obtained his 4-year degree in video production/journalism from Kansas State University. After enough time networking, interning, and freelancing, he achieved the position of Video Producer with a successful and established West Coast video production company. Although he stayed in the field as an employee for 4-years before moving to contract work, he explained that within the first few months he realized the position was not exactly what he had envisioned. Yes those elements he desired were there, but they were only a small part of the job. He told me that the first thing on the job description should have been “Sherpa” because he mostly carried equipment around all day and just set it up and took it back apart again.
Why is this important? Well in that specific field, internship opportunities are rampant and Temp labor is a very prevalent part of the video production industry. If he had worked as a temp for a video production company, he may have learned early on that he needed to focus more on the liberal arts aspect of his degree and less on the video production emphasis. If he had temped in that field, it could have saved him 4+ years as an employee in a field that he does not want to be an employee in.
The next important thing that temping can do for a new graduate is expose them to the white collar environment.
It is quite likely that a new graduate has never actually worked in a white collar setting. Even college jobs are unlikely to provide opportunities to participate in a white collar environment that is similar to the graduate’s future career setting. Temping can provide that experience.
One’s career success can be started in overdrive if they approach workplace interactions correctly. In many cases, performance is secondary to the interaction one has with their coworkers and staff at a new job.
