Setting Life Goals – Without a goal there can’t be a plan, and without a plan, very little time and energy is productive.
I recently found an article about setting life goals with this interesting video that proposes a new perspective for goal setting. See the rest of this blog post below the video.
One of the concepts mentioned is setting “end goals” instead of “means goals”
Make sure to watch the video for a more in-depth understanding of the concept.
End goals are the reasons that we set means goals. An end goal would be to travel. A means goal would be to go to college for the degree that gets the job that generates the income to travel with.
If your end goal is to travel, then finding the means to do so may not require a degree and specified job. It may require finding the hack that allows you to travel the soonest and the most. The possibilities are endless.
For many of us, the end goal is to provide a comfortable and happy life for ourselves and our families. And this may lead to a means goal of beginning a new career path.
As you seek your end goals, think of the three following needs to fulfill:
Experiences:
What experiences do you wish to have – Travel, family, health and fitness, material possessions, music, arts, anything?
Growth:
How do you hope to grow/improve? What knowledge and abilities do you seek?
Contribution:
How can you give to the world? To your community? To a good cause you believe in?
Unfortunately, most of us can’t simply drop everything to pursue our end goals.
Fortunately, we can start seeking the most effective means to achieve our end goals. We can all develop a plan to move towards the experiences, growth, and contribution we wish to pursue during our short time on this planet.
